UWG will be purchasing an Intoxilyzer device with part of Menkes' donation.

To many people $20,000 is a great deal of money. University of West Georgia student Michael Menkes wanted to show his school his appreciation so he donated $20,000 ($10,000 each to two different programs at the school) to the school. Both the University of West Georgia Police Department and women’s studies program recevied $10,000 each thanks to Menkes’ generousity. What’s so great is that he hasn’t even graduated yet – the criminology major and women’s studies minor will graduate in May 2011.

Menkes has specified that the funds be used for purchasing multiple Intoxilyzer 2000 devices (an alcohol level measuring device) for the police department and to fund the Menkes Family Women’s Studies Scholarship. He hopes his donation to the police department will help people realize the dangers of alcoholism. The Menkes Family Women’s Studies Scholarship was announced in March to coincide with Women’s History Month. Menkes hopes the school will eventually create a women’s studies major for future students.
